More than 200 homes and businesses hit by power cut in Manchester city centre

UPDATE: Power was restored by 11.30am

A huge power cut is affecting hundreds of homes and businesses in the city centre.

A total of 228 properties around Chorlton Street and Portland Street have been affected.

TfGM tweeted that 'multiple traffic lights' aren't working due to the outage.

Josh Morris tweeted about the incident just after 10am on Tuesday saying: "Sounds like half of Chorlton Street in the city centre is out with a power cut."

"And someone just tweeted me from Portland Street with no power," Anthony Kingdon replied.

Chris Taylor tweeted: " No chippy, no pub, no Thai massage. An attack on our way of life."

TfGM warned motorists to 'approach with caution' following the power cut.

In a tweet, put up at 10.30am, the transport group said: "Update: Multiple traffic lights are not working on Portland Street in the City Centre due to a power failure. Approach with caution."

A spokesman for Electricity North West said engineers were on site to fix the problem.

The issue was expected to be resolved by around midday.

He said: "At 10.10am the power went down. It's expected to be back on at midday.

"228 properties have been left without supply. We don't know the cause."
