More than 200 homeless people placed in accommodation during coronavirus outbreak

More than 200 people who are homeless have been placed in accommodation in Bristol during the coronavirus crisis.

Last month, the Government asked councils across England to get rough sleepers off the streets to slow the spread of coronavirus and last week a homelessness charity in Bristol said 150 people who were rough sleeping were now in accommodation.

In Bristol, the council said a total of 450 rooms were needed to house rough sleepers and people who are homeless in the city during the crisis.

Bristol City Council has now provided figures on the number of people who have been housed.

A spokeswoman said: “Thanks to the generous response we’ve had following the council’s appeal for ensuite rooms or flats across Bristol to house rough sleepers and homeless people during the coronavirus crisis, 215 people have been placed in accommodation that meets their needs.

“Putting people in accommodation isn’t enough, and throughout the crisis we are working with partners across the city to ensure the vulnerable get the meals and medical support they need.

“We are coordinating all our work with Public Health, the NHS, the police, probation services and our service providers, and we would like to thank them, our volunteers and all of the hotel providers who have come forward to help so far.”

The spokeswoman said they were still looking for further suitable accommodation, and urged people who might be able to help to get in touch.

David Ingerslev, Regional Head at St Mungo’s, said last week that this was an extremely worrying and difficult time for their clients.

If you see someone who is rough sleeping, Bristol City Council is asking people to please email details of their description and location to bristolstreetconcern@mungos.org
