Almost 2,000 take on a sunny North Tyneside 10K race

Thousands of runners took on a scenic stretch of coast for the North Tyneside 10k.

Around 2,000 took part in the race, on a sweltering Easter Sunday morning.

The route took runners from North Shields to St Mary's Lighthouse, via Tynemouth and Whitley Bay .

Landmarks along the 6.2 mile race include Tynemouth Priory and Castle, the seafront, Spanish City and St Mary's Lighthouse.

The race has proved a big hit with runners, with places selling out at Christmas.

Club and fun runners across the country signed up for the 10k, hoping to beat the course record, set by Mongolian athlete Serod Batocir in 2011, who clocked the distance in 30 minutes and 26 seconds.

This year's race was won by North Shields Poly runner David Green in a time of 32m 36s. The first female over the line was Jacqueline Penn of North Shields Poly in a time of 38m 31s.

Phil Scott, head of environment, housing and leisure at North Tyneside Council said, “The race was an early sell out and there was a real buzz in the days leading up to it.”

“I’d like to congratulate the winners and everyone that took part whatever their finish time and personal goals.”

Entries for the 2020 race will open in the Autumn.
