More than 170 salmonella cases reported from pork scratchings

More than 170 people have fallen ill after eating pork scratchings resulting in an urgent product recall issued by The Food Standards Agency (FSA).

Packs of the snacks by Mr Porky, Jay’s and The Real Pork Crackling Company which were due to expire in February 2022 are being recalled after being linked to a total of 176 salmonella cases.

Cases were recorded from September 2020 until now.

The FSA has advised anyone who has bought any of the recalled products not to eat them and to return them to the shop were they bought them for a full refund, to reduce the risk of any further illness.

The production of the products involved in the case was voluntary halted at the factory linked to the outbreak, once a possible link was first identified earlier this month.

Dr Lesley Larkin from Public Health England said: “We have established a link between the 176 cases based on the analysis of data obtained through whole genome sequencing and epidemiological investigations.

"Salmonella can be spread from person to person, so anyone affected should adhere to good hygiene practices including washing your hands thoroughly after using the bathroom and avoiding handling food for others if you have symptoms.

"Anybody with concerns that they have symptoms of salmonellosis should contact their GP or call NHS 111.”
