More than £170,000 worth of illegal cigarettes taken off the streets of Cardiff in one day

More than £170,000 worth of illegal cigarettes were taken off the streets of Cardiff in one day.

Raids were carried out across the city on Thursday where officers confiscated illegal cigarettes, tobacco and cash.

One video shows a police officer smashing the window of a car to access goods stored inside as part of the operation.

Some of the £170,000 cigarettes seized by authorities in one day in Cardiff on Thursday May 13 (Shared Regulatory Services)

The Shared Regulatory Service and South Wales Police worked on the operation that also seized nitrous oxide canisters.

Councillor Michael Michael, cabinet member responsible for Shared Regulatory Services at Cardiff council said: “Working alongside the South Wales Police, the Shared Regulatory Service executed a number of warrants yesterday at both residential and commercial properties to confiscate illegal cigarettes, tobacco and any cash from these illegal activities.

“Approximately £170,000 worth of cigarettes and tobacco were taken off the streets of Cardiff, as well as £7,500 in cash, nitrous oxide canisters and a vehicle that had illegal goods stored inside.

“Specialist sniffer dogs were used in the operation, and all the evidence is now been collated and prepared for legal action.

“Illegal tobacco causes harm to our communities. The sale of it supports organised crime, encourages continued smoking and encourages children to try smoking.

"Its cheapness and ease of supply are particularly attractive to young people and others on low incomes, and it eliminates the price incentive for existing smokers to quit the habit

“Our message to those who are selling these products is that these operations will continue. We will act on all intelligence that we receive and take appropriate action."

South Wales Police officers were present to assist with entry and to prevent a breach of the peace.

Anyone with information on illegal cigarettes is asked to contact the Crimestoppers hotline anonymously on 0800555111 or visit crimestoppers-uk.org.
