More than 150 positive coronavirus tests recorded in Bristol in past 24 hours

More than 150 positive coronavirus test results have been recorded in Bristol over the past 24 hours, government data reveals.

A total of 158 people received a positive test result in the city today (Saturday, October 17). This brings Bristol's total to 3,346 cases since the pandemic began.

This latest increase is the second biggest daily rise in positive test results in the city.

The biggest daily rise came yesterday (Friday, October 16) when 164 positive test results were recorded.

Nationwide, 705,428 people have tested positive for Covid-19.

'Circuit breaker' lockdown proposed for every half term

Two-week 'circuit breaker' lockdowns should be held every school holiday to tackle coronavirus, a scientist has suggested.

Professor Graham Medley, who sits on the government’s Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (SAGE) committee, said it would make sense to shut down businesses and schools to coincide with half term breaks and the Christmas holidays.

Speaking on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme yesterday (Friday, October 16), he said this would help to reduce the amount of school time children would miss.

While most half-term breaks are only one week, he said this would not be enough to be effective in stopping the spread of the virus, as infected people can be contagious for longer.

He said: "It's a proposal, it's a way of reducing prevalence of having some control over the virus without having to go into severe restrictions before you have to.

"Potentially you could say if we do it at half term, we could do it again over the Christmas holidays.

"It [the timing] is advertised so businesses and people know it's going to happen, that potentially helps a lot."
