More than 100 people heading to Crossmichael for Beltie Triathlon Festival

More than 100 people will descend on Crossmichael this weekend for the Beltie Triathlon Festival.

The 19th Crossmichael Triathlon will take place on Saturday and Sunday with a packed programme catering to all ages and abilities.

John Whittaker of organisers Duke Events said: “We have around 140 people, which is a big jump on two years ago.

“We have around 25 for the longer distance, and we have a good group for the standard distance.”

The festival will kick off on Saturday with a Very Wee Beltie aimed at novices. It will start at 4pm and consist of a 300m swim, 12km bike ride and 3km run - although participants don’t need to do all three stages.

John explained: “It will be for people who have never done this sort of thing before. If they want to only do a swim and the bike, or the swim and a run, then they can.”

The Very Wee Beltie can be entered on the day at Crossmichael church hall from 3pm and people will also be able to register for Sunday’s Wee Beltie and Big Beltie at the same time, as well as on the day itself.

The Wee Beltie will be a standard distance triathlon and begin at 9am. The Big Beltie is a middle-distance triathlon and is due to get under way at 8am.

The two races – which can be entered either as individuals or a team for a relay competition – follow similar routes, with the Big Beltie involving more laps.
