More than 100 dead after plane crashes into houses in Pakistan

More than 100 people are believed to have died after a plane crashed into houses in Pakistan.

The Pakistan International Airlines plane came down near the city of Karachi.

The aircraft had 99 passengers and eight crew members on board.

Witnesses described how the plane attempted to land 'two or three times' before crashing in a residential area near to Jinnah International Airport.

The plane was arriving from Lahore, the capital of Pakistan's Punjab province.

The mayor of Karachi, who attended the scene of the crash, initially announced that none of the people on board had survived.

But Pakistani civil aviation officials have since said at least two people have survived the crash.

A nearby resident named Abdul Rahman said he saw the aircraft circle at least three times, appearing to try to land at the airport before it crashed into several houses, Associated Press reports.

Video footage of the plane flying low over the houses appears to show one of the engines on fire.

Pakistan prime minister Imran Khan tweeted: “Shocked & saddened by the PIA crash. . . Immediate inquiry will be instituted. Prayers & condolences go to families of the deceased.”

It is not yet known if any residents were injured or have died.

The cause of the crash is yet to be confirmed.

It comes just days after the country began allowing commercial flights to resume after a coronavirus lockdown.
