More than 100 Covid cases in Lanarkshire for five consecutive days

More than 100 new coronavirus cases have been recorded in Lanarkshire for five consecutive days.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon confirmed another 130 cases in the region today as she warned further restrictions across Scotland may be needed “in the near future”.

Since the first cases of the virus were confirmed in the region in March, there have been just six days when more than 100 new cases have been confirmed.

Ms Sturgeon said it was “possible we will have to do more” after a further 697 people across the country were confirmed as having the virus yesterday.

Only Greater Glasgow and Clyde (242) and Lothian (145) saw more cases announced today than Lanarkshire.

More than 5000 people have now tested positive for the virus in Lanarkshire.

Speaking at her daily media briefing, Ms Sturgeon said: “It is vital that we do everything we can to get this situation under control in a proportionate way.

“The restrictions we announced a couple of weeks ago - particularly the request not to visit other people’s houses - is an attempt to get the virus under control and we are very hopeful that it will help us stem the increase in the virus.

“But given the numbers we are seeing, it is possible we will have to do more. There may well be a need for some further restrictions in the near future.

“I can say the government will be considering the latest clinical evidence later on today, and the cabinet will be considering the up to date situation when it meets tomorrow morning.

“If we do decide more restrictions are necessary - and no decision has been taken yet - I want to give you an assurance we will endeavour to give the public as much notice as possible.”

Last week, a record 716 new positive cases were announced in the region including a daily record of 152 on October 3.

No new deaths have been recorded in Lanarkshire so far in October however, 13 people died as a result of Covid-19 in September.
