More than 100 Covid-19 cases in many Wirral areas for first time since January

Five Wirral areas have more than 100 coronavirus cases, figures not seen since the start of the year.

In the week up to December 15, Bebington had 122 infections, followed by Rock Ferry (105) and Bromborough (102).

Two more wards, Bidston and St James and Birkenhead and Tranmere, had 101 cases.

Infections at this level have not been seen since the week up to January 15, when most of the borough had more than 100 cases, with hundreds being treated for the virus in Wirral’s hospitals.

The borough is of course better placed to deal with such high levels of infection now, given the vaccine rollout and the current push on ‘booster’ jabs.

At the moment, hospitalisation levels remain stable, with around 30 people being treated for Covid-19 in Wirral’s hospitals, a number which has remained stable since October.

But the government is worried that the Omicron variant will put huge pressure on hospitals across the country and is considering moving back to Step 2 restrictions in England according to The Mirror.

This would lead to a ban on indoor mixing and a return to hospitality venues being forced to serve customers outside.

Julie Webster, Wirral Council’s public health director, said: “Boosters are now essential for fully vaccinated adults.

"But my message to people who have not had their jabs is that it’s not too late!

“Your vaccinations are waiting for you - and as we head into the busy festive period, it is more important than ever that you claim them.”

Stressing the urgency of getting the jabs, Ms Webster added: "First and second doses are really important and will protect you well from most variants of the virus – such as Delta, which is still circulating in Wirral.

“Getting all three doses will give you the best protection from becoming seriously unwell if you catch Covid-19.

“The sooner you start your course of vaccinations, the sooner you and your family are protected. With the additional walk-in clinics popping up this week in Wirral, there is no reason to wait.”

But the public health director said that was not all people should be doing over Christmas.

Ms Webster continued: “We now know that the Omicron variant of Covid-19 is highly transmissible and has the potential to put enormous pressure on essential services, this winter.

“To stop the spread of infection, I urge all residents to continue doing all the things that we know keep us safe – as well as following the new Plan B guidance.

“Please wear a face covering in all enclosed spaces, including on public transport, shops and at Christmas events. It is now a legal requirement to do this in most indoor settings unless you are exempt.

“Work from home if you can. Wash your hands regularly and use hand-sanitiser when you’re out and about.”

Testing is also very important.

On this, Ms Webster said: “If you feel well and don’t have symptoms, you should still take lateral flow tests before socialising, going to events, busy workplaces, or shopping.

”You can collect free testing kits from lots of sites across Wirral. If you do have symptoms, self-isolate immediately and get a PCR test.”
