More than one hundred cars from Dublin that were well outside their 5km travel limit were turned away from two Wicklow beaches this afternoon.
The cars had travelled from all over the capital while others travelled from as far away as Clonee and Dundalk.
Gardai ordered the vehicles to turn back from Magheramore and Brittas Bay while they also issued more than 40 fixed charge notices for illegal parking.
Wicklow gardai said: "Gardai at Magheramore and Brittas Bay today turned back more than 100 cars with people having travelled from places like Clonee, Dundalk and all parts of Dublin.
"More than 40 fixed charge notices were issued for illegal parking.
"We would ask that people do not travel to these locations.
"We will be trying our best to keep these areas clear over the coming weekend and checkpoints will be carried out.
"Avoid being made turn around and just stay away. If you are within 5km, please continue to socially distance and dispose of gloves/masks properly."
There were similar scenes across Dublin as people flocked to the city's beaches to enjoy the fine weather.
There were reports of traffic jams and difficulty finding parking in Portmarnock and Malahide as sun-worshipers packed out the local beaches.
