More than 100 breaches of new COVID-19 test rules recorded at Dublin Airport

More than 100 breaches of new COVID-19 test requirements have been recorded at Dublin Airport since their introduction earlier this month.

Under new measures introduced by the Government, passengers travelling into Ireland from all countries are now required to show a negative PCR test carried out no more than 72 hours prior to arrival in Ireland.

Figures released by the Department of Justice & Equality show there have been 110 breaches of the requirement from 19,320 arrivals at Dublin Airport between Saturday, January 16 and Sunday, January 24.

There have been around 140 breaches in total at all ports and airports in the same time period, reports thejournal.ie.

The breaches were a mix of travellers either failing to provide a test result of providing one that was beyond the 72 hour limit.

A file is being prepared by the Director of Public Prosecutions in relation to the breaches.

Tighter travel restrictions were announced on Tuesday as part of the extension of Level 5 lockdown until March 5.

The new measures include mandatory quarantine at a designated facility for people who arrive in the country without a negative PCR test taken in the past 72 hours.

Passengers arriving without a negative test now face a fine of €2,500 or a six-month prison sentence.

Visa-free short-term travel from South Africa and South America has also been suspended until at least March 5.

It comes as Taoiseach Micheal Martin revealed that almost half of returning passengers into the airport on Tuesday were returning holidaymakers.

He told the Fianna Fáil Parliamentary Party that 397 of the 800 arrivals were returning from holiday destinations.
