There were more than 100,000 workers across Lanarkshire still on furlough when restrictions began to ease last month.
A total of 115,600 people were listed on the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme (CJRS) at the end of March, a year after the scheme was introduced by Chancellor Rishi Sunak.
North Lanarkshire had the third highest figure in Scotland behind Glasgow and Edinburgh with nearly 60,000 workers on the furlough scheme.
In neighbouring South Lanarkshire that figure was slightly lower at 55,700 but the local authority sits fourth on the furlough league table.
Speaking earlier this year, the Chancellor said: “Our Covid support schemes have been a lifeline to millions, protecting jobs and incomes across the UK.
“There’s now light at the end of the tunnel with a roadmap for reopening, so it’s only right that we continue to help business and individuals through the challenging months ahead - and beyond.”
Rutherglen and Hamilton West had the highest number of furloughed employees of any Lanarkshire UK parliamentary constituency with 18,900.
East Kilbride, Strathaven and Lesmahagow was next on 18,200, followed by Coatbridge, Chryston and Bellshill on 17,800.
The figures shown were before hairdressers, barbers, garden centres, click and collect and homeware stores were allowed to reopen on April 5.
Provisional figures show there has been a decrease in levels of furlough between February and March, with 4.2 million on furlough at 31 March 2021, down from 4.7m on February 28.
The number of employees on furlough peaked at 8.9m last May. This figure fell to 2.8m at October 31 and then rose again to 4.9m at the end of January.
The furlough scheme is set to continue until the end of September.
