More than $1 million worth of jewellery stolen from home in Eildon, north-east of Melbourne

Victorian police are appealing for public help to find more than $1.25 million worth of jewellery that was stolen from a home north-east of Melbourne.

Police said the distinctive and rare pieces included gold and diamonds.

They were stolen from a home in the Eildon area between 5:30pm and 8:30pm on Saturday, December 17.

The owner of the jewellery returned home and found the thieves had gained access through a side door and stolen the pieces.

"Unfortunately, the victim did have a substantial amount of jewellery that she'd collected over a lifetime," said Detective Senior Constable Aaron Diwell from the Alexandra Crime Investigation Unit.

They included necklaces, earrings, rings and bracelets, many of which contained large inset jewels, as well as high-end watches.

Senior Constable Diwell said many of the pieces were distinctive and rare and held a large amount of sentimental value for the owner.

They were in a locked place in the home.

It did not appear any other items had been stolen from the home, Senior Constable Diwell said.

"These are very precious pieces of jewellery, and we are very keen to reunite them with their rightful owner – particularly this close to Christmas," Senior Constable Diwell said.

"We would urge anyone with any information to come forward. Please have a look at the images of the jewellery, and let police know if you come across them."

Police are especially urging people to keep an eye out on re-sale websites for the items.

Anyone who recognises the jewellery or with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or by submitting a confidential report on the website.
