More than 1.8m people have asked to stay in UK after Brexit under EU Settlement Scheme

Almost 2 million people have applied for 'settled status' to stay in the UK after Brexit.

New figures from the Home Office show that 1,860,200 applications had been received by the end of September.

The EU Settlement Scheme is open to citizens of the EU, the European Economic Area (EEA) and Switzerland, and their families and is free of charge.

The scheme asks applicants to prove their identity, demonstrate they live in the UK, and declare any criminal convictions.

The total number of applications finalised by September 30th was more than 1.5 million and of these, 61 per cent were granted settled status, and 38 per cent were granted pre-settled status.

Two applications were refused on "suitability grounds", according to the statistics.

A total of 520,600 applications were received in September alone.

The figures are classed as experimental because they are still in the testing phase and not fully developed. The Home Office report warned they should be "treated with caution".

EU citizens and their families have until at least December 2020 to apply to the EU settlement scheme.
