More than 1.6 million people set to be offered Covid booster jabs

More than 1.6 million people will be invited to have their Covid booster jab next week.

Those eligible for a third jab will be contacted and asked to book an appointment.

The NHS says that about 9.5 million people have already been invited for their booster jab.

A booster jab is advised for people who had their second vaccine at least six months ago.

Invites will be sent via letter, email or text message.

Among those set to be eligible for a third jab include people living in care homes, adults over the age of 50, frontline health and social care workers, people aged from 16 to 49 with underlying health conditions, adult carers and adult close contacts of people with weakened immune systems.

Dr Nikki Kanani, deputy lead of the NHS vaccination programme, said: "It is encouraging to see that thanks to the efforts of NHS staff, millions of people have received their booster already and just over six weeks in, with over half of eligible over 50s already protected as we head into a winter like no other.

"I’ve recently had my booster at a local pharmacy and with more people becoming eligible every day I would encourage anyone who receives their text or letter invite to book an appointment and get their potentially life-saving top-up jab as soon as they can.

"The vaccine is simple, quick and effective and will help us to give the country maximum protection from the virus."

Health bosses in Manchester have said that everyone eligible for the booster should be offered a jab by December.

David Regan, Manchester’s director of public health, said: "The booster programme will be vital this winter giving that layer of additional protection for some of our city’s most vulnerable residents.

"Your local GP or the national NHS Team will be contacting people to organise their appointments and I would urge anyone to take up the opportunity to get jabbed when offered an appointment."
