More than 1,000 new coronavirus cases in UK as death toll rises by 77

More than 1,000 people tested positive for  coronavirus  in the UK in the 24 hours up to 9am on Wednesday, according to official government figures.

A further 179 deaths have also been recorded in the UK in the last two days, according to figures published by Public Health England.

The PHE dashboard was not updated yesterday (Tuesday, August 11) due to a technical fault resulting in higher figures.

Of the 102 deaths on Tuesday, 100 were in England and two were in Wales.

On Wednesday (today) of the 77 deaths recorded, 72 were in England and five were in Wales.

A total of 46,706 people have now died in hospitals, care homes and the wider community after testing positive for coronavirus in the UK.

There have been a further 1,009 lab-confirmed cases of coronavirus taking the overall total of confirmed positive cases to 313,798.

The Department of Health  has paused the publication of its daily death figures  while a review is conducted into how the data is compiled by PHE.

Instead, the Public Health England (PHE) dashboard has been updating the figures and hospital deaths for England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland are still being released daily.
