More teenagers arrested as police officers continue to patrol town

Four teenagers have been hauled in by police as a crackdown on antisocial behaviour in Southport continues.

Two fourteen-year-olds have been arrested after other children had their bikes "forcibly" snatched in Southport town centre.

The two boys, one from Bootle and one from Liverpool, were arrested on Eastbank Street last night (Sunday).

They remain in custody, and police say three bikes have been returned to their victims.

On Thursday and Friday (September 2 and 3), two teenagers were arrested on suspicion of robbery in Marine Park, after a 13-year-old boy had his bag snatched on Sunday, August 30.

A 16-year-old boy from Southport also remains under investigation following an incident on August 27, in which a 16-year-old boy was assaulted on Scarisbrick Avenue.

Three teenagers, aged between 14 and 16, also remain under investigation following a stabbing in West Street on August 23, in which a man in his 20s was left injured.

The arrests come as police officers continue to tackle antisocial behaviour in Southport.

Officers say there have been further reports of fighting, verbal abuse and drugs in the area.

Over the past two weekends (August 27-29 and September 3-5), dispersal zones have been in operation across the town centre, as well as the waterfront.

The orders have given police officers powers to direct people they suspect are causing or likely to cause crime, nuisance or anti-social behaviour to members of the public to leave a designated area and not return for up to 48 hours.

Under the legislation, officers have the power to seize any item used in the commission of anti-social behaviour.

Community Policing Inspector Graham Fisher told the ECHO : "This weekend's dispersal zone is one of many powers we can use, and unfortunately recent incidents mean it has been required.

"We understand and share the concern of the local community about recent incidents, and while it's pleasing to see arrests being made, we understand impact this has on those who live, work and visit the area.

"Our town centre and seafront should be safe spaces for everyone to visit, not for threats and anti-social behaviour like we have been seeing in recent weeks.

"Our officers will be visible in the Southport area to disperse any groups causing issues, and to provide reassurance to the vast majority of law-abiding people in the community.

"I'd also ask the parents of guardians of our young people know where they are and ensure they are not involved in a such incidents.

"We need to work together to prevent such incidents happening."

Anyone with any information regarding anti-social behaviour is urged to call police on 101, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Always call 999 if a crime is in progress.

Alternatively, information can be given via @MerPolCC on Twitter or 'Merseyside Police Contact Centre' on Facebook.

Anyone with images, dashcam, CCTV or doorbell footage is being urged to share it with police.
