More snow to hit in several areas as vicious Storm Bella plunges thousands into darkness amid stark Met Eireann warnings

Nearly 1,000 homes across Ireland are without power tonight as the tail end of Storm Bella stings the nation – with snow blanketing several parts of the country.

Eight counties have been issued status yellow wind warnings ahead of a freezing night that will see the mercury take a nosedive.

And seven more are set to be battered by racing winds this evening – with gusts of up to 110 km/h expected in parts.

The snow warning is in place in Cavan, Monaghan, Donegal, Longford, Louth, Leitrim, Roscommon and Sligo, and lasts until 7am tomorrow.

Meanwhile, the seven counties facing a wind warning – in place from 6pm this evening until 2pm tomorrow – are Donegal, Galway, Mayo, Sligo, Clare, Cork and Kerry.

Met Eireann's forecast for tonight reads: "Cold and windy tonight with widespread showers to start, some of sleet and snow.

"Showers will become more scattered overnight. Lowest temperatures of 0 to 3 degrees occurring early in the night with frost and icy stretches developing.

"Temperatures rising later as west to northwest winds increase fresh to strong and gusty with gales or strong gales on Atlantic coasts."

Storm Bella brought vicious winds and pouring rain last night – and left upwards of 1,000 homes without power.

The ESB said crews are continuing to work on faults and all will be repaired over the course of the day.

"Some of the faults are from this morning, as well as pockets from last night's wind," the company said in a statement.

Affected areas include Templeogue in Dublin, Kilkock in Co Kildare, Milltown in Co Kerry and Milford, Co Donegal.

The freezing conditions don't look likely to ease up any time soon, with temperatures set to reach minus 4 on Tuesday night as more snow covers the country.

The mercury will stay below zero degrees each night for the first half of the week.
