More selfish parkers captured in infuriating photos

People were shocked this week to see as many as eight vehicles parked on a pedestrian area in Liverpool City Centre.

The image of so many cars parked on the pavement prompted calls for more action to clamp down on lazy and selfish drivers who think it is ok to park illegally and potentially cause danger or problems for others.

That image was captured on Sunday by the Bad Parking Liverpool twitter account, which dedicates itself to highlighting dodgy parking around the city.

And unfortunately the account continues to be very busy at present.

Since Sunday's image of the so called 'car park' near Liverpool One, the account has posted many more images of brazen bad parking in Liverpool - with a number also in the city centre.

One image shows cars parked on both sides of Benson Street, making it essentially impossible for anyone on foot or in a wheelchair to get down the street without using the middle of the road.

More problems were pointed out at Liverpool One, with another car casually parked up in what is clearly a pedestrianised zone.

The Strand is a real problem area for pavement parking, with an area of the road close to Liverpool One being impacted regularly.

In the latest image, a large four by four vehicle can be seen parked entirely on the pavement in the area.

But of course this isn't a problem confined to the city centre, it is a major issue in the suburbs too and another image posted this week by the account shows two cars attempting to avoid double yellow lines in Wavertree High Street by parking fully on the pavement instead.

Pavement parking is a real issue in Liverpool and today, Childwall Liberal Democrat Councillor Alan Tormey will raise the problem at a meeting of the council's Neighbourhoods Committee.

His motion states: "Pavement parking can pose a hazard to pedestrians, especially people with sight loss, parents with pushchairs, wheelchair users and other disabled people.

"People with sight loss are especially at risk as they can be forced into the road and faced with oncoming traffic that they cannot see.

"Pavements are not designed to take the weight of vehicles and so surfaces can become damaged or subside, presenting a further hazard for pedestrians, particularly those with disabilities."

The motion points out that the idea of taking action against pavement parking is currently problematic because the existing legislation is confusing and the legal remedies available are 'unsatisfactory.'

Cllr Tormey's motion calls on the council's chief executive to write to the Transport Secretary asking for a promised response to the government's consultation on pavement parking to be published and to call for more powers for local councils to take action.
