More schools hit with coronavirus cases as list tops 50

The list of schools in our region hit by coronavirus closures has grown by at least four over the weekend as cases continue to rise.

New restrictions will come into force from midnight in an attempt to halt a rocketing case rate in the region.

Pubs, cafes and other businesses have all been hit by closures, but schools have borne a lot of the brunt as well, with 56 across six boroughs having now either closed or sent pupils home.

This morning Redbridge High School, a special school in Fazakerley, was forced to close due to staff shortages stemming from the number of people who had to isolate due to positive coronavirus cases.

Later in the day, more schools were confirmed to have been hit.

Gayton Primary School in Wirral, Belvedere Academy in Liverpool and The Heath School in Runcorn all had to send home specific pupil "bubbles" after confirmed cases.

They join a growing list of schools hit by positive tests as thousands of students and teachers across the region are forced to isolate.

Gayton Primary advised parents that no Year 1 pupils should come into school, Belvedere asked 59 pupils to stay at home and the Heath School was forced to send both years of its GCSE cohort into isolation.
