More schools close, medical practice a COVID exposure site as RSPCA shelter reopens

UPDATE: Hamilton South Public School has been added to the list.

ANIMAL shelters, including the Rutherford RSPCA refuge, will reopen on Tuesday as the state continues to emerge from COVID restrictions.

The risk is far from over in the Hunter, though, with a Lambton medical practice the latest addition to the list of exposure sites in the region.

Weston Public School, Tuncurry Public School and Mayfield East Public School have also closed due to a COVID infection in the school communities.

Mayfield West Public School and Thornton Public School, which both closed on Monday for the same reason, will reopen from Tuesday.

Irrawang Public School, which also closed on Monday due to an exposure, was not among the schools the NSW Department of Education initially said would reopen on Tuesday but was included in a subsequent update shortly before 11am.

Elder Street Practice has been flagged a casual contact venue, meaning anyone who attended on Wednesday October 20 from 2.30pm to 2.50pm must get tested and isolate until they receive a negative result.

That is unless they have been notified by NSW Health that they have been deemed a close contact.

The RSPCA said that from Tuesday double vaccinated members of the public could attend shelters.

The organisation said that it would continue using online application forms for adoptions and taking the necessary steps to comply with NSW Health advice on COVID-19.

"To find your new companion, we recommend first searching our website for animals available for adoption and then completing an online adoption form," the RSPCA said in a statement.

"Our experienced adoption teams will then review your application and contact you to discuss your lifestyle, experience, and the needs of the animal to make sure you are a great match.

"If successful, our team will allocate a meet-and-greet appointment at the selected shelter for you to bond with your new friend and process the adoption."
