More safeguards are needed to protect young children from online groomers

The scale of online grooming of young children will strike fear into any parent.

Campaigner Annabel Turner’s stark claims dispel any notion that alarm is being overstated.

She found a target in every one of 50 primary schools visited.

Her Cybersafe project uncovered serious problems, from pornography being shared at a very young age, to direct attempts by adults approaching pupils online.

There is clearly a lot more parents, schools and authorities need to do.

It must be tempting to shelter ­children from online activity entirely but there are simple steps that won’t cut kids off while keeping them safe.

Annabel wants more frank ­conversations with children from about P4.

She says parents should be more involved with their primary-age ­children online and not let them post alone.

Advice includes keeping youngsters from joining social media platforms before they are clearly ready.

Crucially, it should be recognised this is not the fault of children and their parents – it is the fault of sick criminals.

And it is a responsibility that must be taken more seriously by social media providers.

They are the real people we should be targeting to reassure parents and keep our children safe.

Scotland has a drugs problem and is struggling to break the cycle.

The death toll is horrifying – ­Scotland has the highest number of drug-related deaths in Europe – and it is getting worse, not better.

Decriminalisation is one policy that many might recoil from – but at this stage, nothing should be rejected out of hand.

Scotland often looks to other ­countries for inspiration, and Portugal reports positive results from its liberalising approach.

It is vital that we take a fresh look and remain open to radical suggestions.

Because one thing is certain – what we’re doing is not working.
