More road deaths in 2020 than 2019 even with drop in traffic due to pandemic

More people have died on Irish roads in 2020 than at this point last year even with the drop in traffic due to lockdowns.

So far 118 people have been killed, compared to 111 in 2019.

Under the Government’s Level Five public health restrictions people have been asked to stay at home and only travel for essential journeys.

With rush hour traffic less than normal, motoring group AA has urged drivers to be on the lookout for vulnerable road users, such as cyclists and pedestrians, whose numbers increase during lockdowns.

The AA’s director of consumer affairs, Conor Faughnan, said: “Road deaths actually went up during the last lockdown, which was a major shock to those working in road safety.

“As we move into winter, a traditionally dangerous time on our roads, we must all do our part to ensure that this does not happen again.”

He said motorists must be mindful during this week’s mid-term break and slow down in built-up areas.

He also advised against dangerous overtaking and recommended drivers give extra space to vulnerable road users.

With colder weather ahead the AA also reminded motorists of the importance of car maintenance and to have a breakdown plan in place.

Faughnan added: “One of the main issues our AA Rescue patrols get called out to in the winter months is cars not starting due to battery issues that are worsened by the shift towards colder weather.

“This year, however, many people are also likely to be using their cars less as they work from home or opt to walk or cycle to school with their children. “Whether it’s a case of your car refusing to start or a breakdown on an essential journey, you don’t want to be caught unprepared in dark, wet or cold conditions so it’s important to have a plan in place about who you can contact for assistance.”
