People living in the North, Northeast, Bangkok and surrounding provinces can expect another cold spell from Saturday into late next week, with temperatures dropping 4-6°C.
But people in the South can expect more heavy rain and strong wind-driven waves during the same period.
The Meteorological Department on Friday said another strong high-pressure system moving in from China will extend over upper Thailand and the South China Sea from Feb 3-8, while westerly winds will prevail in the North.
This will lead to a drop in temperatures in upper Thailand of 4-6°C. The North and Northeast will see cold to very cold nights, with frost on mountaintops in the North.
It will also be colder in the East and Central Plains, including Bangkok and surrounding provinces.
The northeast monsoon over the Gulf of Thailand will get stronger and this will bring more heavy rain in the South with wind waves in the Gulf and the Andaman Sea 2-3 metres high in the South. Small boats should stay ashore, the department warned.
People in upper Thailand should take care of their health during the cold snap, and in the South be aware of the dangers brought by more heavy rain.
They should keep abreast of weather news.
In Sakon Nakhon, in the Northeast, temperatures fell to 12°C on Friday morning. The forecast is for similar temperatures elsewhere in the region.
The provincial disaster prevention and mitigation office said the cold weather was more severe than in recent years. More than 10,000 blankets were being handed out to affected residents.
