More rain for North East states reeling under floods, landslides

GUWAHATI/SILCHAR: A “Red Alert” has been sounded for the northeastern states of Assam and Meghalaya by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) over heavy to extremely heavy rain in the next four days.

Floods and landslides have already wreaked havoc in these two states after a week of incessant downpour.

The IMD on Monday warned of light to moderate rainfall at most places with isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall and isolated extremely heavy rainfall over Assam-Meghalaya on Wednesday, as well as thunderstorms and lightning at isolated places.

For Arunachal Pradesh, the IMD has issued an “Orange Warning”, with light to moderate rainfall at most places, heavy to very heavy rainfall in the frontier state.

The “Red Alert” has been sounded mainly for western Assam, for Wednesday.

Further, the IMD has predicted widespread heavy to very heavy rainfall, accompanied by thunder and lightning over NE states till May 21.

As the flood situation in Assam worsened on Tuesday, the number of affected people doubled to over 4,00,000 in the last 24 hours.

Air fares have gone up two fold between Guwahati and Silchar after rail and road travel was disrupted by landslides at multiple locations.
