More radical plans emerge ahead of major Premier League meeting

The Premier League are said be drawing up what is being described as 'an ambitious plan' to restart the season from behind closed doors in May.

These plans will be discussed in full on Friday at the latest conference call as all 20 clubs will meet via video link to discuss the next step in response to the coronavirus outbreak which has seen the season suspended.

A report from the Daily Mail has suggested this is one of several proposals which will be put forward in the key meeting.

And it is also claimed the government, public health bodies and the PFA would need to give the go ahead for the league to return in May.

This proposal is said to be in response to the financial obligations being placed on the Premier League, who have a £3bn deal in place with TV broadcasters around the world - which is set to end on July 31.

There is also a suggestion that if the season is not concluded by July 16, broadcasters such as Sky Sports and BT Sport could demand rebates of up to £762m.

If this plan comes to fruition matches would likely be played behind closed doors with the Mail claiming only a small broadcasting crew would be present with no media access allowed, an ambulance would also be required.

In the last meeting earlier this month it was decided the league was set to be suspended until April 30.

On Friday, football fans are expected to learn whether that suspension will be extended.

Earlier this week, reports in different national newspapers suggested a different plan to the one outlined by the Mail.

The Independent claimed all 92 remaining fixtures in England's top flight could be televised - in what they are describing as a 'TV mega event' - throughout the summer with multiple games available to watch each day.

That apparent scheme would involve teams being placed in self-isolation camps across June and July.
