More promises after latest deadly crash

The concern over the safety of double-decker buses was renewed last week after a driver who admitted to taking drugs skidded off a road in Wang Nam Khieo district of Nakhon Ratchasima. The crash killed 18 passengers. (Photo by Prasit Tangprasert)

A disastrous double-decker bus crash in Nakhon Ratchasima's Wang Nam Khieo district last Wednesday night which killed 18 passengers and left more than 30 injured has prompted the Transport Ministry to consider issuing a complete ban on such vehicles from operating on provincial and long-distance routes.

Minister Arkhom Termpittayapaisith made the comments after Tuesday's cabinet meeting, stating he had received instructions from Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha to ensure safety for the public and find long-term solutions for preventing bus crashes.

In an announcement similar to one made in 2016, following several deadly crashes, the minister said that double-decker buses with expired certificates will supposedly soon no longer be able to renew their papers. New private operators looking to register double-decker buses with the Department of Land Transport (DLT) will also not be able to do so, he added.
