More people in Wales watched the Gavin & Stacey Christmas special live on TV than the Euros in 2016

The Gavin & Stacey Christmas special had more viewers in Wales than BBC Wales' Euro 2016 coverage of the Wales v Belgium quarter-final, it has been revealed.

The figures, released by BBC Wales, TV viewings and don't include catch-up viewings on iPlayer. They show that 1,286,000 people in Wales watched the Gavin & Stacey Christmas special live, making it the most-watched TV programme on any channel in Wales since at least 2002.

The comedy special, which returned after almost a decade away from screens, pulled in 11.6m viewers in total, making it the  most watched Christmas Day show in 2019 by more than 5mi people with the Queen's Speech was next in line with 6.4m.

And viewing figures for the BBC One comedy soared to 17.1m in the week after its Christmas Day release. The Christmas special caught up with the Barry Island and Billericay gang nearly 10 years down the line and saw the titular characters with three children while Smithy and Nessa co-parent Neil, The Baby while living apart.

Back in 2016 Wales' 3-1 win over Belgium in the Euro quarter finals set a TV record with 1.27m tuning in at its peak, surpassing the 1.14m that watched Wales beat England 30-3 to clinch the 2013 Six Nations title.
