More oil on already troubled waters

Here we go again - The Guardian is among the many papers reporting petrol prices moving further upwards; I wonder how long it will be before we get our first oil-price-based business closure? I hope I'm wrong and that's alarmist. In terms of other transport, business travellers will be stranded alongside everybody else at Heathrow until at least 6.00pm today.

A couple of weeks ago we reported the pressure for small firms to be allowed to benefit from the London Olympics; if your company is hoping to do so then it's worth reading The Independent's report on how the Olympic brand will be regulated. The same newspaper has more on Eurozone growth stagnation, this time pinning the responsibility firmly on the German economy.

Mid-term bad news if you're in retail comes from the Daily Telegraph with a prediction that consumer spending will slow down permanently, the good news being that this is because we're all going to start saving and therefore spending money we have rather than money we don't. Also looking longer term is the paper's piece on pensions and possible strategies to get companies plugging the gaps in their funds more willingly.

The Times' website was down as this bulletin went out so I'll look at their stories for the midday entry. The Daily Mail has a piece on cheques no longer being used in 20 years' time - I'd have guessed they'd fade out sooner; and for people concerned about Red Letter Days' ability to honour its outstanding vouchers, often given as incentives to employees, the Evening Standard yesterday said 80 per cent of suppliers would be backing the new owners.
