More of Nottingham Forest's Championship rivals opposed to restart plans - report

A number of Championship clubs are said to be unhappy with the English Football League’s plans to restart the season.

The campaign has been suspended since March due to the coronavirus crisis, but it was announced at the weekend that matches are set to resume on June 20.

QPR have been vocal in making their opinion clear, with manager Mark Warburton describing the decision as “ludicrous” and chief executive Lee Hoos saying the club are “vehemently opposed” to the planned schedule.

And Barnsley have written to the EFL expressing their concerns, saying: "If the 19/20 season is completed, it will be completed with a lack of sporting integrity.”

The Daily Mail now report Charlton Athletic, Stoke City and at least one other team have joined a “number of Championship sides in venting their anger” over the June 20 date.

They claim several clubs are opposed to the plan to restart the season on that day, following the announcement late on Sunday night.

Nottingham Forest and their fellow second tier sides were back in non-contact training last week. However, it is said full contact training is unlikely to begin before this weekend.

It is suggested the Potters are among those who feel they have insufficient time to prepare, particularly when compared to the Premier League.

The report adds: “Another source of frustration has been the slow speed at which clubs have been told about broadcasting arrangements for the remaining games. Playing games behind closed doors will lead to a major financial hit and clubs were hoping to know sooner how any broadcasting income will also be affected.”

The Mail quote an EFL spokesman on the restart plans as saying: “The EFL announced the proposed restart date of the 2019-20 season following a number of direct approaches from Championship clubs seeking clarity.

“It should be recognised that there is significant support within the Championship to get back playing as soon as possible, from a sporting integrity perspective and to lessen the impact on season 2020-21.”
