Today a load of retailers have announced their trading results and guess what, it's a real mixed bag. It appears, though, that sportswear is declining as a desirable item while classic clothes are increasing.
This isn't a surprise and any savvy retailer will have anticipated it. In the same way that you might have had a problem if you specialised in shell suits a decade ago (did people really wear those in public? Yes, I suppose they did) you might have a problem if your business is predicated on people buying sports clothes for non-sporting occasions now.
Fashions change and the classics tend to stay, well, classic - if the sports stores have overstocked working on the belief that everyone would continue to buy sports gear as leisure clothes, that's unfortunate but not particularly stunning.
