More men try to quit smoking to benefit long-term health amid coronaviris pandemic

More than half of male smokers and vapers in the UK want to kick the habit for the benefit of their health.

Some 55 per cent of men polled in the study said they wanted to quit and this increased to 67 per cent among men over the age of 55, according to healthcare development firm Kind Consumer, which produces the Voke smoking alternative product.

The survey was released to coincide with  Men’s National Health Week  which runs from today, June 15, until Friday.

Alan Sutherland, boss of Kind Consumer, said: "The impact of smoking on men’s health in the UK remains a significant issue and should not be swept under the carpet.

“As a former smoker myself, I know how hard it can be to quit.  It was only when my health was compromised that I took steps to stop."

Some of the men polled said their decision to quit was influenced by the coronavirus pandemic.

Taxi driver, Azeem Sabir, recently tried to give-up smoking using Voke, a nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) from Kind Consumer, which launched in the UK in November 2019.

He was smoking up to 20 cigarettes per day, mostly due to habit and boredom.

He said: " I feel healthier and have more energy since cutting right back on the number of cigarettes I have each day.  I am worried about Covid-19, so I want to be fitter and healthier."

The findings of poll show that male smokers and vapers across the UK are very aware of the detrimental effects of smoking on their health.

Often a secondary health issue is the driving force to stop smoking or vaping for good with 12 per cent of male smokers and vapers indicating that this was the reason why they were planning to stop.

Voke is a nicotine replacement therapy licensed as a medicine by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency for use as a smoking cessation aid. The product is based on similar technology to that used in asthma inhalers.
