More lives lost to coronavirus in Greater Manchester as North West becomes UK hotspot once more

Twenty more people have died after contracting coronavirus in Greater Manchester.

The region's hospital death toll now stands at 1,867, according to the latest NHS data.

In today's figures, the North West was once more the hotspot for coronavirus deaths across the country, with 30 recorded. In comparison, the North East and Yorkshire had 24 deaths, the Midlands 18 and London nine, NHS England said.

In Greater Manchester, twelve more COVID-19 deaths were recorded at Stockport NHS Foundation Trust. - the NHS trust in charge of Stepping Hill Hospital.

Six more lives were lost at Tameside and Glossop Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust, while another death was recorded at Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust.

Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust also recorded another coronavirus-related death.

NHS England has announced 108 new Covid deaths, bringing the total number of confirmed reported deaths in hospitals in England to 26,722.

The total number of coronavirus deaths at hospital trusts in Greater Manchester, as of June 1, is:

  • Bolton NHS Foundation Trust - 214
  • Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust - 9
  • Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust - 391
  • NHS Nightingale Hospital North West - 3
  • Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust - 466
  • Pennine Care NHS Foundation Trust - 6
  • Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust - 166
  • Stockport NHS Foundation Trust - 197
  • Tameside and Glossop Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust - 160
  • The Christie NHS Foundation Trust - 13
  • Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust - 242

Some of the larger trusts run several hospitals in Greater Manchester.

Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust oversees the Manchester Royal Infirmary (MRI), Wythenshawe Hospital and Trafford General, while Pennine Acute is in charge of North Manchester General Hospital, Fairfield Hospital, the Royal Oldham Hospital and Rochdale Infirmary.

A statement released by NHS England said: "Patients were aged between 29 and 99 years old. 16 of the 108 patients (aged between 48 and 94) had no known underlying health condition."

In the North West, 30 hospital more deaths were recorded in its 24 hour data - the highest of any region in England.
