More layoffs at McDonald's; eight Illinois employers cutting 724 jobs

Feb. 06--McDonald's, which last month jarred investors by reporting drops in annual profits, revenues and restaurant customers, said it's laying off 57 more workers in Oak Brook, only a month after plans to cut 63 jobs in its headquarters city were announced.

The disclosure by the fast-food chain came in a newly released batch of mass layoff notices filed with the state.

"At McDonald's, we are moving with a sense of urgency to improve our performance and enhance our customer focus," spokeswoman Lisa McComb said Friday morning. "This includes a hard and thoughtful review of our current organizational structure in the U.S., adjusting how we invest our time and resources, and eliminating some roles while adding or changing others." The company also announced last month that it was replacing its chief executive.

She said affected workers will have the opportunity to apply for other jobs, and, if they don't get one, will receive severance packages.

McDonald's and seven other Illinois employers across a variety of industries told the state in January that they plan to cut 724 jobs in mass layoffs beginning in late February due to everything from lost contracts to corporate restructurings.

The biggest will occur at AT Credit Collection Center in Chicago. Layoffs of the 131 unionized workers will begin March 12. The center is closing, according to state records.

In Manteno in Kankakee County, 121 workers at Kenco Logistic Services will lose their jobs in late March due to a lost contract, state records show. That facility is closing, state records show.

At Quincy Compressor in Quincy, 115 unionized workers will be laid off beginning in late February as the manufacturer consolidates operations, closing that facility, state records say.

In April, 107 unionized workers at Rock River Academy Residential Center, a psychiatric and substance abuse hospital, will get pink slips. State records say it's closing.

Market Day LLC, a grocery wholesaler in Elk Grove Village, will lay off 74 employees starting in March.

The closing of a Nutrition Headquarters call center in Carbondale, will result in 66 employees losing their jobs. Andrea Staub, a spokeswoman, said the Carbondale center was a backup to a New York call center. During bad weather nationally, she said, both centers had problems. So the Carbondale operations were moved to Florida, she said.

On April 1, 57 workers in McDonald's U.S. group at 2111 McDonald's Drive in Oak Brook will be laid off due to a corporate restructuring. A December layoff notice with the state showed that McDonald's was cutting 63 corporate employees at 2915 Jorie Blvd in Oak Brook.

Concentra is laying off 53 workers in Lombard in late March.

A Concentra spokesman said the company is consolidating referral operations in Plano, Texas in April. The Chicago area employees have been asked to consider relocating, and the company added that it also is trying to find suitable positions for laid off employees in the Chicago area. The company said the move does not affect its 11 urgent care centers in the Chicago area.

Under the Illinois Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act, employers must provide 60 days' notice of pending plant closures or mass layoffs. The law applies to businesses with 75 or more full-time employees. A "mass layoff" in Illinois is job cuts at a single site, typically during one month, of at least a third of employees and at least 25 employees, or at least 250 employees regardless of the percentage.
