What’s new: More epidemiological investigations should be conducted to determine the origin of a new cluster of Covid-19 infections found over the past few days in Shulan, a city in Northeast China’s Jilin province, an epidemiologist said Monday.
The “tail” of the outbreak could last for a long time as understanding of the virus is still limited, according to Wu Zunyou, an epidemiologist for the China CDC, in an interview (link in Chinese) with state broadcaster China Central Television. Talking specifically about the current cluster in Shulan, he said it is too early to identify whether a patient found on May 7 was the origin of the cluster.
What’s the background: On May 7, a 45-year-old woman living in Shulan was confirmed to have contracted the coronavirus, the first local infection reported in the city for more than two months.
Most of the 11 other infections that had been detected as of Saturday were people who had been in contact with the woman, including her husband and several of her sisters, according to the local health authority.
