More homes could be added to a controversial North Tyneside housing development

More than a dozen extra homes could be added to a controversial Wallsend development if new plans are given the go-ahead.

Persimmon Homes has asked North Tyneside Council to add 13 new dwellings to an existing development of hundreds of homes.

If planning permission is granted a mixture of two and three bedroom terraced houses and flats will be built on land west of Mackley Court.

Two of the proposed homes would be classed as affordable housing.

The additional homes would be part of a wider project from the developer for 650 homes on land at Sunholme Drive.

However the scheme was mired in controversy with protest from green campaigners who said brownfield sites should be priority for new housing and the land should be left alone.

At the time Holystone Action Group lobbied the council against the plans for its potential effect on wildlife and the application received 1,000 objections from local residents.

Many were in favour of the land remaining a “green buffer” to protect the Rising Sun Country Park.

The authority initially threw out the proposals but they ended up going through in 2014 after the developer lodged a successful appeal with Central Government.

This latest batch of houses is proposed for a plot of land originally ear-marked by the developer for commercial use.

However, Persimmon Homes wants to change this to dwellings because of “market changes”.

A planning document said: “This application site sits within the original Hybrid Application area, in the area originally proposed for commercial development. Due to market changes, we are looking to submit a Detailed Planning Application for 13 new dwellings within the previously approved development footprint.”
