More fireworks seized in Tameside as police continue crackdown on illegal sales and anti-social behaviour

More fireworks have been seized from shops in Tameside as police continue to crackdown on illegal sales and anti-social behaviour.

Already this year, there have been a series of serious incidents in the borough after the potentially dangerous explosives ended up in the hands of children.

In August, a mum and a three-year-old boy were hurt after kids stopped a bus on Katherine Street in Ashton-under-Lyne and hurled a lit firework inside.

Three days later, yobs surrounded a police car on nearby Burlington Street and started throwing rockets at it.

Thankfully the officers inside escaped uninjured on this occasion, but others have not been so lucky.

Fireworks are a big issue in Tameside, particularly during October and November in the run up to Diwali and Bonfire Night when they go on general sale on October 15.

Footage often appears on social media, showing groups of teenagers in the streets, firing rockets at each other, cars and homes from their bare hands.

Last year, a stray firework went through a bedroom window of a house on Blandford Street in Ashton, setting fire to the bed and filling the house with smoke.

Luckily there were no injuries - but residents fear it's only a matter of time before someone is seriously hurt.

Earlier this month, police, along with Trading Standards and Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue, visited 13 retailers across Tameside as part of a crackdown on illegal sales.

Fireworks were seized from three shops - two in Ashton and one in Hyde - after they were found being stored incorrectly or without a licence.

They were taken away for destruction, with GMFRS currently reviewing if any prosecutions will follow.

Insp Lee Derbyshire, of GMP Tameside, urged anyone with concerns about the illegal sale of fireworks to get in touch with police.

He said: "In Tameside North, Operation Desperado will again be focusing strongly on anti-social behaviour and youth violence by patrolling hotspots, targeting offenders, and supporting repeat victims.

"In addition to officers specifically deployed on these duties throughout the Autumn fireworks risk period we also have support from GMP force resources and will be working alongside them with partners and the local community throughout.

"I’d encourage local residents to ensure related incidents are reported to us.

"Crimestoppers can be used to report concerns re illegal sales or use of fireworks anonymously."

A spokesman for Tameside council added: "Our Trading Standards Team, GMP and GMFRS seized a large number of fireworks from an unlicensed retailer in Tameside during a day of action.

"Sale of fireworks are only permitted for registered sellers during specific times of year and we undertake regular checks in order to protect our residents by stopping dangerous goods reaching the market in an uncontrolled manner.

"The majority of businesses in the borough abide by the laws but when we do find unscrupulous businesses we will take action."

A person can be fined up to £5,000 and imprisoned for up to six months for selling or using fireworks illegally.

They can also be issued with on-the-spot fine of £90, according to UK law.
