More COVID deaths in Perth and Kinross as cases continue to rise

Two more COVID-related deaths have been recorded in Perth and Kinross.

Both residents passed away from the virus between June 28 and July 4, according to the latest National Records of Scotland (NRS) statistics.

It marks the third and fourth deaths registered in the region this month with two more residents passing away from the virus between June 14-20.

The number of deaths in the region, where COVID is mentioned on the death certificate, this year now stands at 123.

It comes as new Public Health Scotland (PHS) data shows the COVID-19 infection rate in Perth and Kinross has more than tripled over the past two weeks.

And World Health Organisation data shows Tayside has become the COVID capital of Europe with the current highest rates of infection.

According to the PHS figures, Perth and Kinross ’s seven day positivity rate currently sits at 550.8 per 100,000 in the week ending July 3.

Figures from the week prior show that the region was already recording its highest ever coronavirus rate of infection at 327.1.

The latest readings also show that the proportion of positive tests has gone up to 11.9 per cent - nearly three per cent higher than the previous week.

It comes after a huge increase in cases across the region, with 837 recorded in the week up to July 3, a rise of 340 from the week ending June 26.

Every part of Perth and Kinross is now recording an infection rate.

A plea was made earlier this week to Tayside residents to help ease the pressure on health and care services in the region amidst the surge.
