More coronavirus deaths recorded on day shops reopened

Two more coronavirus-related deaths have been recorded at one Bristol trust.

The University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Trust, which runs Bristol Royal Infirmary and Weston General Hospital, reported two patients had died after contracting the deadly virus.

This has brought the trust's total to 142, up from 140.

Across the UK a further 38 died of Covid-19 in one of the lowest rises since lockdown began.

Meanwhile, North Bristol NHS Trust - which covers Southmead Hospital - hasn't recorded any coronavirus-related deaths for 12 days. Its total has remained at 117 since June 3.

A total of 41,736 people have now died of the disease in all UK settings, including hospitals, care homes and the broader community.

The Department of Health announced that 1,056 more people have tested positive for the coronavirus, bringing the country wide total to 296,857 confirmed cases.

In Bristol and its neighbouring districts, no new cases were recorded on Monday.

As of 4.32pm our city still has 719 cases, while North Somerset's total has remained at 482 since Friday.

And both Bath and North Somerset and South Gloucestershire have not seen an increase since Tuesday (June 9), with the number of confirmed cases in these areas standing at 237 and 406 respectively.

Today saw non-essential shops open across Bristol and the UK.

All retailers vowed they were making sure they are “Covid-19 secure” before reopening.

However, scores of people have voiced their concerns on social media that this could lead to a second wave in cases.

Photographs of long lines of shoppers outside stores in Broadmead were captured throughout Monday.
