Morning everyone. Millions of dollars have already gone out of the door, but Australia still faces potentially years of uncertainty over whether the nuclear submarines promised under Aukus will ever materialise. The online safety chief is doubling down on her insistence that under-16s be banned from watching YouTube. And how Barack Obama is curbing his enthusiasm for US history.

Australia

  • ‘Winter die off’ | The early onset of cold winter weather has been blamed for killing thousands of bony herring – a crucial food source for bigger fish and birds such as pelicans – in a lake in central west New South Wales.

  • Aukus doubts | Australia and the UK potentially face months of more uncertainty over the future of the Aukus agreement after a key British official suggested that the Trump administration’s unexpected review of the nuclear submarines deal is likely to extend well beyond its initial timeframe.

  • YouTube call | Australia’s online safety regulator has released research underpinning her call to not exempt YouTube from the under-16s social media ban, with a survey revealing the platform is the most used by children under 16, and the place where children are most exposed to harmful content.

  • Fatal inaction | The shocking death toll from known ligature points in Australian prisons has risen to 64 as new documents obtained since Guardian Australia’s recent investigation reveal more fatalities than previously identified.

  • Unlawful force | A naked woman suffering a mental health episode was punched, kicked, dragged by her hair and pepper-sprayed by two New South Wales police officers who have admitted using unlawful force.

World

  • ‘One in, one out’ | People arriving in the UK via small boats will be detained and returned to France “in short order” and verified asylum seekers accepted instead in a “one-in, one-out” deal agreed by Keir Starmer and Emmanuel Macron.

  • The far right | Sweden’s migration minister has said he is “shocked and horrified” after discovering his teenage son’s involvement in far-right extremist groups.

  • Khalil claims | Lawyers for Mahmoud Khalil, the Columbia University graduate and Palestinian activist who was detained in the US for months, have filed a claim for $20m in damages against the Trump administration. The US president’s attempt to end birthright citizenship suffered a setback as a federal judge in New Hampshire blocked the controversial executive order nationwide.

  • Gaza deaths | At least 15 people, including 10 children, have been killed by an Israeli strike as they queued outside a medical point in central Gaza, amid intensifying Israeli attacks that left 82 people dead across the strip.

  • Hopes and fears | Escalating Russian drone attacks and the concern that Ukraine will be split up have cast a shadow over a meeting of European leaders in Rome to plan for the reconstruction of the country. It comes as Volodymyr Zelenskyy said there were signs the US could resume military aid and Marco Rubio expressed frustration with Russia.

  • Comic turn | HBO has announced that Barack and Michelle Obama will team up with Curb Your Enthusiasm star Larry David for a sketch comedy series focused on American history to mark the country’s 250th birthday.
