More Airdrie people are in work but Coatbridge unemployment stats worsen

The latest job statistics for Monklands yielded mixed results – with slightly more people in work in Airdrie than this time last year, but fewer Coatbridge residents gaining employment during the same period.

A total of 2357 residents of Airdrie & Shotts claimed jobseekers’ allowance in May – down four on 2018’s statistics, and 33 per cent down on figures released in 2014.

The Coatbridge, Chryston & Bellshill ward saw 2359 unemployed residents; this was a rise of 94 from 2018.

However, there are 31 per cent fewer out-of-work people than back in 2014.

The labour market figures also revealed that the number of jobseekers across North Lanarkshire in May was 8526 – down 76 on 2018 – and a 31 per cent decrease on 2014’s statistics.

Overall the UK’s unemployment rate is at a joint record high of 76.1 per cent, as the number of people in work reaches 32.8 million; and there are 1.9 million more women in work since 2010.

Work and pensions secretary Amber Rudd said: “Our workforce increasingly reflects our vibrant society, with a record number of women in employment while the number out of work falls to an all-time low.

“Young people who have received their exam results and are beginning their career journeys should know that they are entering a workforce that is flourishing and full of opportunity; I hope all young people feel empowered to flourish.”
