Like John Filsak (Letters, 3 June) I was a pedantic objector to invite/quote. Recently, however, I read in Trollope’s 1858 Dr Thorne that the old Etonian Sir Louis Scratcherd asked the doctor “Have you an invite too, doctor?” Perhaps I shall now have to use this as a quote.

• It’s all very well telling us what to do with roast broccoli (Cook, 30 May), but my problem is that broccoli doesn’t cook properly unless it’s blanched before roasting. More à la dentist than al dente, I find.
