MORE roads across the Newcastle local government area could have 30 km/h speed limits under the council's draft 10-year cycling plan.
The strategy, endorsed for exhibition on Tuesday night, sets an overarching goal for the city to have a "connected cycling network of principal routes and low stress streets" and for "riding and walking to be the natural choices for short trips" by 2030.
The plan outlines a variety of actions to achieve the goal, including building more off-road paths, fixing "missing links" in the existing network, upgrading on-road infrastructure, improving end-of-trip facilities, providing more information about safe-cycling routes and a host of other initiatives.
But it also moots reducing road speed limits to 30 km/h.
A 30 km/h limit was introduced to Honeysuckle Drive, Wharf Road and Shortland Esplanade in August.
The lord mayor also recently alluded to reducing the limit in Merewether and The Junction where the council is building a cycleway.
The draft plan is on exhibition for eight weeks.
