More 20mph speed limits could be introduced in one part of Merseyside

More 20mph speed limits could be introduced in one part of Merseyside.

Wirral Council is looking to move forward with proposals to introduce 20mph imits in more areas of the borough.
A period of consultation with residents has now begun on the first 15 ‘zones’ where speed limits could be reduced in an effort to improve air quality and make roads on which people live, shop or study safer.

Over the next four years, a total of 54 zones will be consulted upon covering all residential areas across Wirral. This follows a decision taken in March by the Environment, Climate Emergency and Transport Committee.

The committee agreed that funding - provided through the Liverpool City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement Combined Authority Transport Plan - would be invested to increase the number of 20mph speed limits across Wirral. Between now and the end of November 2022, the council will be consulting on the first 15 zones.

20mph limits have been in place in parts of Wirral for 10 years and have proven to be most effective in residential and shopping areas and around schools. Each of the zones has therefore been identified based on the type of area, as well previous accidents.

Cllr Liz Grey, Chair of the Environment, Climate Emergency and Transport Committee, said: “Introducing more 20mph zones in predominantly residential, retail, or educational areas is one of the priorities identified by Wirral’s Road Safety Working Group. They help to create safe and healthy street environments, which work well for all people and help them live active, healthy lives in areas of good air quality.

“I’d urge residents to take a look at the proposed 20mph zones and let us know what they think.”

More information about these zones and how local people can provide feedback can be found here.
