A moped rider is fighting for life after he was hit by a suspected stolen car being chased by police down the wrong way of a busy road.
Emergency services were called to Moorgate Road in Kirkby at around 8pm to reports that a man had been injured in a serious crash .
Police have now confirmed that a short time before the collision a Vauxhall Zafira came to the attention of officers in the area.
As officers began to chase the car, which was travelling the wrong way down the road, it collided with an oncoming moped.
Pictures show a Vauxhall at the scene with a shattered windscreen.
The male moped rider was rushed to hospital a short time later by ambulance crews and is described as being in a critical condition.
A 20-year-old man from Kirkby was arrested at the scene on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle, dangerous driving and failing to stop.
He has been taken to a local police station for questioning.
A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said: “We are currently attending to an incident in Kirkby this evening, Tuesday, 16 July.
“Shortly before 8pm, a Vauxhall Zafira came to the attention of officers in the area.
“A pursuit was carried out and the Zafira, which was travelling the wrong way down the road, collided with an oncoming moped on Moorgate Road.
“The incident has been referred to the IOPC and police remain at the scene.”
Road closures were put in place at the scene from the East Lancashire Road and are expected to remain in place over night.
