Moore Street alternative plan to go on public display

A plan for the preservation and development of Moore Street, including a newly constructed scale model, will go on public display for the first time on Thursday 7 October at 11am in the Pearse Centre at 27 Pearse Street in Dublin.

The plan is being presented by the Moore Street Preservation Trust and the 1916 Relatives Alliance.

James Connolly Heron, leading Moore Street campaigner and great-grandson of 1916 leader James Connolly, is calling on Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage Darragh O'Brien and Dublin City Council planners to endorse the plan.

He said it fulfills all of the recommendations demanded by the Department in its response to British-based property developer Hammerson’s recent planning application for the site.

James Connolly Heron said: "The Minister and Dublin City Council planners must heed the call of the Department which states ' the planning authority should consider whether an alternative design of the redevelopment of this site would allow for the retention and sensitive adaptation for reuse of significant existing structures'.

“This is exactly what our plan does. We, the Moore Street campaigners and 1916 relatives, have produced THE alternative to the widespread demolition and gross over-development being proposed for this most historic site by Hammerson.

"The plan and model will be available for the Minister to view and to be briefed on its detail," he added.

Renewal works on Moore Street will be included as part of a massive €430 million investment in Dublin development projects.

The plan will see trade promotion and protection of the 1916 history belonging to the street in public realm renewal works for the iconic street.

The works will include improvement of lighting, public art, paving, stalls, signage and structural and restoration works to 14-17 Moore Street to rejuvenate the historic street.
