Moonraker to make IMAX film after securing £500k from Creative England

A visual effects studio in Bristol has secured half a million pounds from Creative England and is planning to use the money to make an IMAX film.

Moonraker VFX said the funding is "game changing" and will be used to license its own original 3D content for big screens around the world for the first time.

The ‘Moonraker Originals’ IMAX film will include immersive content such as flying meteors or erupting volcanoes, the company said.

According to the firm, the film will be of "high scientific value" with the potential to appear on digital education platforms and link to the science curriculum.

Jon Grafton, managing director of Moonraker, said: “We’re delighted to be working with Creative England on this project.

"They will be highly invested and proactive in helping us move forward and will be important partners on the journey.”

The initial two-year project will be produced for the big screen, but Moonraker said it also anticipates spin-offs in other formats to include television, augmented reality and flying theatres.

Tim Evans, head of investment at Creative Growth Finance, said: “We’re proud to be part of this incredibly talented and creative team’s story.

"We’ve been particularly impressed with the diligent way that they have responded to the Covid-19 crisis, and the quality of their creative product.

"Our partnership with Moonraker follows a series of investments into ambitious and proven businesses making a name for themselves in the creative sector.”

The finance follows the government’s £1.5billion rescue package for the arts industry, which was announced last week.

Simon Clarke, creative director at Moonraker said the funding was a "real opportunity" for the company to drive forward its original content and have more creative and editorial control.

He added: “Not only will this project create ongoing revenue through our immersive licensable 3D content for theatres across the globe, but the films will help showcase the Moonraker brand worldwide."
