Moon, Spieth's former teammate at Texas, 'ecstatic' after breaking through at the Byron Nelson

IRVING, Texas _ If Alex Moon keeps this up, he's going to be known for a lot more than just being Jordan Spieth's roommate.

After all, he made the cut at the AT&T Byron Nelson Classic, and his roomie didn't.

The 27-year-old former Texas teammate of Spieth put himself in a tough spot after brutal playing conditions on Thursday afternoon led to a 4-over-par 74.

But on Friday, Moon took advantage of a lull in the breeze and rolled out a 4-under 66 to make the cut with room to spare. It will be the first time he'll play on the weekend in a PGA Tour event.

Of course, he's only had two chances. He was given a sponsor exemption into the Nelson last year.

This time, he earned his way in by winning the Monday qualifier in which only four spots are available.

This one is way sweeter, he said.

"I'm ecstatic," he said. "I feel like my game is good enough to be a lot better on the leaderboard right now. But just to get it done today _ I knew I was capable of a round like this. I could have let it go (Thursday). There were moments when I was getting very frustrated. And just to keep it in position and not shoot myself out of the tournament, it was big."

Moon has knocked around on various satellite tours. In 2015 he was on the PGA Tour's Latinoamerica circuit. He had a second-place finish at the Colombia Open. Other than that, he's played one Web.com event and last year's Nelson, missing both cuts.

Last year was a lot like this one, with the major difference of making the cut. Moon shot 77 in the first round and played better in the second round, but not well enough to survive until the weekend.

This year, he felt much better about his game after the opening 74.

"I thought I played really, really well today," he said. "It can easily skyrocket on you if you let one thing bother you. I got up and down from everywhere. I hit it out of bounds on No. 3, which I didn't even know was possible. I hit it into the one yard that doesn't have a fence. I ended up making 5, hit it within a couple feet (on his fourth shot). Overall, I just feel a lot better this year."

Making the cut for the first time on the PGA Tour will do that for you.
