Here's a story that deserves wide recognition. Terry Horne, a reporter with the North West Evening Mail in Cumbria for 20 years, rejected the idea of having a retirement gift. Instead, he donated the £320 collection by colleagues to help restore the Sir John Barrow monument in Ulverston. It commemorates the 19th century founder of the Royal Geographic Society and requires £1m worth of repairs. The paper will celebrate Horne's career with a two-page spread later this week.
